Program Overview:Due to the combined prevalence of obesity and cardiovascular disease, treating patients with mood disorders or depression has become a daily clinical challenge. Recent studies have shown an association between mood disorders and a decrease in the probability of survival following hospitalization, targeting depression as yet another major risk factor for post-operative morbidity and mortality.

Weight gain attributed to common cardiovascular medications can contribute to the ongoing cycle of disease progression. Understanding the multiple physiologic factors underlying weight gain, as well as its correlation with mood disorders and cardiovascular disease is the cornerstone of formulating a cohesive treatment plan.

A comprehensive evaluation of each patient’s physical and mental history, with special attention to current comorbidities and daily medications, helps create a customized approach to treatment. This CME program will discuss the implications of overweight and cardiovascular disease, and ways in which to identify patients with mood disorders.
Learning Objectives:• Understand the psychosocial consequences of obesity and the implications to the progression of cardiovascular disease as a way to break the downward spiral of events that contribute to increased morbidity

• Evaluate the symptomology of mood disorders and depression in the presence of multiple cardiometabolic risk factors to better identify patients at risk

• Incorporate screening tools as a rapid method to identifying, diagnosing, and managing depression in overweight/obese patients
